FOR many dietitians, the Registered Dietitian (“RD”) title represents a career of dedication and commitment to high standards of dietetic practice. However, for those considering resigning from the College of Dietitians of Ontario, it’s important to reference this background accurately.
Understanding the Protected Status of “Registered Dietitian”
In Ontario, “dietitian” is a protected title restricted solely to those currently registered with the College. Therefore, if you have resigned or retired from active registration, you may not refer to yourself using “Registered Dietitian,” “Dietitian,” “former dietitian,” or “retired dietitian,” or “RD.” This restriction helps maintain public clarity and trust in the protected status of regulated health professionals.
How to Reference Your Professional Background
Although you cannot continue using the RD title in any form, there are alternative ways to convey your dietetic experience:
- Using Your Registration Dates in a Bio
For example, you might say, “NAME held a certificate of registration with the College of Dietitians of Ontario from [start date] to [end date].” This phrasing accurately acknowledges your professional experience while clarifying that you are no longer registered. - Referring to Past Registration in Introductions
When introducing yourself in certain contexts, you can mention that you were previously a Registered Dietitian as long as you clarify that you have resigned. For example, “I was registered as a dietitian in Ontario from [start date] to October 2024 and have since resigned.” - Mentioning Your Past Experience in Relevant Discussions
If discussing your background, you may refer to your previous registration with the RD title as long as it’s clear that you are no longer an active registrant. For example, you could say, “I was a Registered Dietitian, but I recently retired from practice in October 2024.” This phrasing clarifies your current status while allowing you to share your knowledge and insights.
Recognizing Your Contributions
Acknowledging your dietetic background within these guidelines ensures clarity and helps avoid misunderstandings about your registration status. We celebrate your achievements and encourage you to continue sharing your expertise in ways that honour your experience and commitment to the profession.
