Regulation Matters 2021 - Issue 1, May

Are We Regulating Dietetics the Right Way?

In December 2020, the Ontario Ministry of Health launched a new reporting tool for colleges, the College Performance Measurement Framework (CPMF), to improve its evaluation of regulated health profession colleges. The new tool was developed by the Ministry with Ontario’s health regulatory colleges, subject matter experts and the public.

The new CPMF evaluation is about driving excellence in health profession regulation. Its purpose is to ensure the application of consistent, transparent benchmarks and best practices across all 26 health profession colleges in Ontario. These indicators will be used to evaluate and improve the performance of health profession regulators in the future to achieve the best possible healthcare.

The College of Dietitians of Ontario welcomes this new evaluation and the opportunity it provides to improve our regulatory practices, and to enhance transparency and public accountability in our work.

Relationship Between Dietitian Regulation and the College’s Evaluation

We have certain expectations of dietitians – from registration requirements and professional standards to ongoing professional development through the quality assurance program – and it is important that, as a regulator, we are confident that what we ask of dietitians reflects best practices. It is our role as a regulator to research and identify the knowledge, skills and competence needed to enter the profession, and to identify the best quality assurance principles to maintain safe dietetic services.

Similarly, through the new CPMF, the Ministry has identified seven domains and accompanying standards the College must demonstrate for fair and effective regulation of the dietetic profession:

  • Domain 1: Governance

  • Domain 2: Resources

  • Domain 3: System partner

  • Domain 4: Information management

  • Domain 5: Regulatory policies

  • Domain 6: Suitability to practice

  • Domain 7: Measurement, reporting, and improvement

Improving our regulatory performance is important and the College is determined to deliver on this.

How This Will Drive Change and Improvement

The new CPMF is about driving excellence in health profession regulation. Its purpose is to ensure the application of consistent, transparent benchmarks and best practices across all 26 health profession colleges in Ontario. These indicators will be used to evaluate and improve the performance of health profession regulators in the future. The goal is for the public to have access to a safe and consistent standard of healthcare that is evidence-based and reflects best practices. We welcome this new evaluation and the opportunity it provides to improve our regulatory practices, and enhance transparency and public accountability in our work.
