Regulation Matters 2018 - Issue 1

2018 Fall Workshop - Record Keeping

Record keeping is integral to safe, effective and competent dietetic services. A comprehensive record establishes an account of how a dietitian exercises critical thinking and professional judgement when treating a client. It also demonstrates that the services were evidence-based and client-centered.

The 2018 workshop will be based on the College’s recently published Professional Practice Standards for Record Keeping, 2017. The workshop will review the standards for record keeping that RDs must achieve in dietetic practice, the required elements for a complete record and the record keeping obligations for RDs who act as Health Information Custodians or agents as defined in the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004.

While much of the legal and professional obligations for record keeping relate to client health records, this workshop will also provide guidance for best practices outside of clinical dietetic practice. We will cover record keeping requirements for:
  • Email
  • Social media
  • Other technologies
  • Group education classes and workshops
  • Public health
  • Business practices
We encourage all RDs and dietetic interns to attend this interactive workshop which will allow attendees to learn from the College and their peers and apply their knowledge to several case scenarios.

College Update

We will also review the College highlights over the past year including activities from the Registration, Quality Assurance, Practice Advisory, Patient Relations and Complaints & Discipline Programs. Presenters will be available after the workshops to address further questions.
