2018 Workshop Evaluation Results

Record Keeping in Dietetic Practice: Facilitating Quality Health Care

The 2018 workshop, Record Keeping in Dietetic Practice: Facilitating Quality Health Care, focused on understanding why client health records are an important part of quality client care.

The College’s Practice Advisors thoroughly enjoyed delivering the record keeping workshops. We were very appreciative of the participant engagement and the interesting discussions at each presentation.

  • 664 dietitians attended the workshop (16% of membership)
  • 60 dietetic interns
  • 31 in-person locations
  • 5 locations via video-conference

Understanding the "Why"

281 attendees responded to the post-workshop evaluations. Almost all reported that understanding the ‘why’ of record keeping helped dietitians to better exercise their critical thinking and professional judgement in applying the what, how and when of record keeping.

94-100% agreed or strongly agreed that understanding the why allowed them to:
  • recognize the importance of when to keep client health records in their dietetic practice
  • be aware of what their professional obligations are for keeping client health records
  • feel confident in their ability of how to apply the concepts/information from the 2018 CDO workshop to ensure professional obligations for record keeping in their dietetic practice
  • become familiar with the resources from the College and other sources related to record keeping to support their dietetic practice

Take-Home Messages

  • RDs must document in a systematic and timely manner – so the right people have the right information at the right time.
  • Keeping records IS patient care.
  • Private Practice RDs have additional obligations as the Health Information Custodian.
  • Never really considered that patients or families might read what I write so will keep that in mind moving forward. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it.
  • If it’s not documented, it didn’t happen or wasn’t discussed.
  • Keeping accurate and appropriate client health records and ensuring they are stored confidentially is my professional obligation.
  • Record keeping is not just a requirement, it helps improve the quality and continuity of care, and helps in clinical decision-making.
  • Record keeping doesn't always involve just you - you need to work with others to make sure information is being communicated correctly.
  • Others are relying on my record and I need to be accurate and timely.

Respondents Also Noted

  • Reinforced my strong commitment and recognition of the importance of record-keeping.
  • Group discussions triggered additional learning opportunities.
  • It would be beneficial if there could be a voice-on podcast of annual workshops (including Q & A) on the CDO website for future reference.
  • Check with the College if you are in doubt - there are staff and resources that are helpful.
  • One of the most worthwhile CDO workshops I've been to in the last several years. Thank-you! Very important and applicable info.
  • The more we can ask questions, the more we keep our heads out of the sand the more pro-active we can be in safe and effective practice. Great to meet as a group to help facilitate our accountability in an environment that encourages questions rather than looking to red flag members. Keep up the great work!
