Orientation module and assessment

The orientation module provides an overview of health regulatory colleges, the College of Dietitians of Ontario, the Board of Directors, and College Committees.

The orientation module can be accessed here. At the end of the module is a link to the assessment, which demonstrates your understanding of the College and the work we do.

The role of the Board

The Board is responsible for governing the College and regulating Ontario’s dietetic profession in the public interest. It sets the College’s strategic direction, monitors its activities, establishes bylaws, standards, and regulatory policies. The Board is composed of approximately 12 members — six elected dietitians and five to eight members of the public appointed by the government.

Time commitment

Being part of the Board requires a significant time commitment and flexibility in your schedule to accommodate meetings and governance duties. All board directors serve on two to three committees. The time commitment for each committee varies based on the workload. You should expect to commit about 20-25 days per year.

Board and committee meetings

The Board has four, regularly scheduled meetings per year, which take place virtually and in-person at CDO’s Toronto office. There are two, one-day meetings, and two, two-day meetings per year. Sometimes, the Board will have additional meetings, which will be scheduled on short notice, to discuss urgent or time sensitive matters. These meetings will be virtual.

Preparing for board and committee meetings involves reviewing meeting packages. The amount of preparation time needed varies, but can range from a half-day to a full-day.

If you are considering running for election, discuss the time commitment with those who may be affected, such as your employer. If elected, it is important that you are available to participate on the Board and committees.

Directors receive an honorarium

The full-day rate for attending and preparing for meetings is $300. Directors can also claim for expenses related to College work, including travel, accommodation and meals.
