As of Right
As of Right Legislation
On November 3, 2025, the Ontario government passed changes to legislation that expand “As of Right” legislation. These changes make it easier for regulated health professionals from other parts of Canada to work right away in Ontario.
As of January 1, 2026, dietitians from outside Ontario may practise for up to six months while completing their registration requirements with the College of Dietitians of Ontario.
As of Right Eligibility
Is your certificate of registration equivalent to a general certificate of registration in Ontario? You may be able to work right away in Ontario as of January 1, 2026.
Full List of Conditions for Eligibility
To be able to practise under the As of Right legislation, an applicant must:
- Hold an active registration with an equivalent certificate in another Canadian jurisdiction.
- Not been refused registration in another Canadian jurisdiction within the past two years.
- Have no findings of professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity.
- Not be the subject of any current professional misconduct, incompetence or incapacity proceedings.
- Have submitted an application for registration with CDO and signed an attestation before providing services in Ontario.
- Hold professional liability insurance, applicable to practise in Ontario.
- Use the relevant Ontario title (Registered Dietitian).
- Be physically present in Ontario to provide services to Ontario residents.
Conditions that Apply During the Six-Month Period
Those practising under the As of Right legislation can practise for up to six months while completing their registration requirements with CDO.
Applicants practising under As of Right legislation must stop practising in Ontario if:
- Their CDO registration application is rejected.
- They do not register with the CDO within six months.
- They do not continue to meet all the eligibility criteria.
Individuals who are interested in practising under the As-of-Right provisions or have any questions can reach us at registration@collegeofdietitians.org.
Note
Registered Dietitians from other provinces who meet the entry-to-practice requirements can be registered with CDO within a few days. Once registered, they are accountable to the regulations and standards of practice that govern the profession in Ontario.
At that time, their eligibility to practise can be verified through CDO’s Public Register.
- Dietitians from other provinces who practise in Ontario under the As-of-Right rules are not registered with CDO. As such, they are not listed on the Public Register. If an employer needs to verify the individual’s registration, they will need to contact the regulatory body with which the out-of-province regulated dietitian is registered.
- Dietitians from other provinces who practise in Ontario under As-of-Right rules must obtain registration with the CDO within six months of practice in Ontario.
- CDO cannot verify the eligibility to practise of a Registered Dietitian from another province before they are registered with the CDO.
- CDO cannot provide regulatory oversight (such as investigating a complaint) until a Registered Dietitian from another province is registered with CDO.
