How to Become a Dietitian
The requirements for becoming a dietitian include academic and practical education components.
Education
The requirement is an accredited 4-year bachelor’s degree or equivalent. You should contact the universities directly to identify their specific application requirements, including pre-requisites.
High School Students
High school students should expect that most schools will require high school math, biology and chemistry courses for admission.
Already have a non-dietetics degree?
When you apply to an accredited dietetics program, they will do an assessment of your degree if you are admitted to the program, they will identify what courses can be transferred to this degree. You should expect to spend a minimum of 2 additional years in a dietetics degree program.
Internship/Practicum
Applicants must also complete an accredited internship or practicum. You must meet the academic requirements in order to be eligible for an accredited internship.
There are a variety of options, including programs integrated with the undergraduate degree, post-degree internship programs sponsored by hospitals or other non-academic organizations, post-degree diplomas offered through universities, or Master’s programs that include an accredited practicum. Refer to the Dietitians of Canada website for more information.
